Skill chains

Many of the skills acquired as characters progress may only be performed in a certain order, or chain. Generally the skills located farther along in the chain are more powerful than those at the beginning, or those that have no prerequisite.

PvPvE system

The PvPvE gameplay of Aion revolves around battles within the Abyss and Balaurea (PvP zones). Within these zones are fortresses which can be controlled by individual Legions (the Aion equivalent of Guilds). Battle to control these castles involves combat against players of the opposing faction and computer controlled NPCs at the same time, using siege weapons obtained from PvE raid content. Legions in control of a castle are entitled to funding from taxes and players within the faction get specials from NPCs and discounts for travel and vendor items.[6] The game currently does not allow factions to fight against those of their own race, except for casual duels or in the Arena, or Panesterra.

The participation in PvP is rewarded with Abyss Points in the game. The game ranks players as battles are won against fellow players based on their participation in the Abyss and Balaurea. Certain items can be purchased with these points such as high-end armor and weapons. This is referred to as the Abyss Rank system, and there can only be a limited number of high-ranking players per server. The highest-ranking players compete for the relatively few rank positions available.[7] Players of a very high rank are also granted the ability to transform into what is known as a Guardian General; a form that bestows an exceedingly large boost to certain stats. Abyss points are gained by killing other players in combat, and points are lost by being killed by another player. Higher points are awarded for a kill of a much higher ranked player than for killing an equal or lower ranked player. Abyss Points can also be earned by completing certain quests and by selling certain items.

In 4.5 patch, a new Glory Point system is introduced. It replaced the Abyss Point ranking system, turning Abyss Points into a currency to be spent instead of a factor defines players’ rank. You can get these glory points from sieges or pvp and pve instances. Player cannot get these points from killing the opposite faction. Glory points are not usable as currency to buy new items, but they do decrease a certain amount daily, and the number of lost points depends on the players rank


When the god Aion created the world of Atreia, They created the Drakan—powerful dragon-like beasts tasked with safeguarding the humans; performing Aion’s will on the planet; and protecting the Tower of Eternity, Aion’s physical presence on Atreia. For a time, the Drakan obeyed Aion; but over time, they began to enjoy their power, ignoring their duties and abusing the humans who inhabited Atreia. Aion took notice, creating the twelve Empyrean Lords in response.[12] Angelic in appearance, the Empyrean Lords were demigods who walked amongst humans, and used a force called “Aether” to create a powerful barrier, later to be called an aetheric field, around the Tower of Eternity, protecting all of those within. While the outside world continued to be ravaged by the Drakan, who had become the more ferocious Balaur; the humans within the barrier managed to tap into the Aether, gaining their own powers. In time, they would become known as the Daeva.

As time went on, the Lords decided that they had to be more aggressive in stopping the Balaur. With the number of Daeva growing, the Lords decided to form an army, with ten of the Empyrean Lords leading the Daeva into battle; while the remaining two, Siel and Israphel, protected the Tower of Eternity (thus earning the title “Tower Lords”). This conflict between the Balaur and the Empyrean Lords would come to be known as the Millennium War, which led to no real progress by any side.[12] As the war progressed, a faction of Lords began to view the war as unwinnable, and Lord Israphel proposed a discussion of peace with the Balaur. This surprise proposal drew criticism from within the faction; after a lengthy and heated debate, seven of the twelve Lords became the winning majority to move forward with the plan.

However, for reasons unclear, the negotiation failed. When the Balaur arrived at the Tower of Eternity, a commotion broke out, killing a Balaurian captain; the remaining Balaur, enraged, marched upon and destroyed the Tower, which set off a chain reaction that threatened to destroy the planet. However, Israphel and Siel made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their own lives to protect Atreia. The world was shattered into two “hemi-shells”, with a dark Abyss lying between them; but it was held together by the aetheric field created from the Tower Lords’ sacrifice.

While the Balaur were banished to the Abyss, the Empyrean Lords found themselves in conflict with each other. Two groups were formed as a result, each with five Lords; the Seraphim, who had proposed the peace solution and blamed the others for sabotaging the peace negotiations by failing to agree to them; and the Shedim, who blamed the Seraphim, believing that their weakness and their proposing of the peace talk allowed the Balaur to gain the upper hand. From that day on, the two sides became bitter enemies.[12]

The Shedim migrated to Asmodae, the dark and harsh upper, inner half of the planet; while the Seraphim Lords settled in Elysea, the light and abundant bottom half. They both took their humans and Daeva with them, and over time, they adapted to their respective new worlds and declared the opposing side their mortal enemies. Those in Asmodae became the Asmodians, rugged survivors, gaining dark features and a fierce loyalty to their kin.[14] Those in Elysea became the Elyos, growing even more beautiful and believing themselves to be Aion’s chosen people (although they have grown arrogant). From that day on, they would wage war for centuries as bloody enemies.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a third-person action-adventure hack and slash video game developed by Crytek and published by Microsoft Studios. It was released on November 22, 2013 as a launch title for the Xbox One, and was released on October 10, 2014 for Microsoft Windows by Crytek and Deep Silver. Set in an alternate version of Ancient RomeRyse follows the life of the Roman centurion Marius Titus as he becomes one of the leaders in the Roman Legion. Gameplay revolves around Marius using his sword to strike enemies and shield to deflect attacks. Execution sequences are featured in the game, which are quick-time events that serve as an extension to combat. The game features a cooperative multiplayer mode, which tasks players to fight against waves of enemies in maps that are changing dynamically.

The game’s development began in 2006. Originally it was set to be a first-person Kinect-only title for the Xbox 360. However, the team later made three new prototypes, and redesigned to become a third-person hack and slash game, with Kinect serving a diminished role. The development of the game was originally handled by Crytek Budapest, but was later transferred to Crytek’s headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. The game’s combat emphasizes on “flow”, a term referring to a player’s ability to move on to fight against another enemy upon defeating an enemy with few limitations in between.

Revealed as Codename: Kingdom at E3 2010, the game was reintroduced as Ryse: Son of Rome two years later. It received a mixed critical reaction from reviewers upon launch, being praised for its visuals, story and high production values but criticized for its repetitive and simple gameplay. Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, added that he was not satisfied with the sales of the game. Upon launch, the game was supported with several multiplayer-focused downloadable content, but the originally planned Challenge Editor was cancelled.

Gameplay and story

Ryses combat puts many focuses on “flow” and crowd control. As a result, the team introduced a rhythm-styled combat. The flow was described to be one of the most important part in the game’s mechanics, and the artificial intelligence of enemies were designed to break and disrupt players’ flow. The team later chose to introduce the execution mechanics as they found that the combat was proven to be too difficult for players, and that the execution mechanics provided an easier way for players to defeat enemies.[26] The game also focused on precision and timing, tasking players to hit enemies at the correct time and position to gain greater rewards. The developer also hoped that players will use creativity when dealing with enemies.[27] A concept called “mashing to mastery” was introduced in Ryse, in which the game’s combat was designed to be accessible for newcomers and be challenging for hardcore players.[28] In order to achieve the “mashing to mastery” mechanic, the team introduced the execution mechanic, which is a series of quick-time events, as the team at Crytek hoped that it would make these scene more rewarding to players, as well as allowing the flow of combat to continue.[29]

Ryses intention was to build a cinematic story. The team put emphasis on building the game’s protagonist, Marius Titus, who was described as a character with three different sides. The game’s cinematic director, Peter Gornstein, considered that adding personalities to characters as one of the most important features in creating a good story, as it allows players to care for and emphasize the character. He also hoped that the character is consistent throughout the game. As a result, the team developed transition sequences, in which gameplay can fluidly transit to cinematic.[30] The game also put emphasis on the protagonist’s motion capture.[31] To achieve this, the team collaborated with The Imaginarium Studios to develop the cinematic and motion-capture technology for the game.[15] According to Yerli, having good motion capture technology can help “create the ultimate emotion”.[32] The game’s camera was originally set to be controlled by artificial intelligence, drawing inspirations from Seven Samurai and Children of Men, but the idea was later scrapped and a dynamic camera was designed to replace it. The camera was also made closer to the playable character than other hack and slash games, as they hoped that they could show a “claustrophobic brutality” from it. According to Crytek, having a close up camera has always been the game’s core element.[33]

The developers claim to have drawn much of the inspiration for the game’s combat and tactics from “…the innumerable Roman campaigns that led to the modern concept of total war”. Fifteen hero level characters were given full motion capture with the same detail as Marius.[33] Unlike Crytek’s previous projects, the game is set in ancient Rome, a place which the developer thought was underrepresented in video games.[34] The game also features different Renaissance-inspired imagery. In order to create an accurate environment, the team visited different locations in Rome.[35] While the game is set in Rome, its story is not entirely historically accurate. Crytek described it as a “historical mash-up”, in which the team selected their favourite historical events and put them together into the game.

Raid has been praised for its graphics, but criticized for its microtransactions. Pocket Gamer welcoming the “sheer graphic quality”, “beautifully rendered and animated” characters as well as a “generous experience for new players”. However, the game’s aggressive monetization has also garnered attention.[4][5] Gamezebo praised the game for trading “the typical anime-style visuals for a more realistic, dark fantasy look”, going on to write about “the truly stunning experience, with some of the finest attack animations and environmental effects we’ve seen in the genre so far.” However, the article also criticises the game’s underlying monetization, pointing out that progress is difficult, “particularly if you don’t plan on spending any actual money on the various upgrades”.[6] In its review, BlueStacks also praised the visuals, saying, “The animations are simply spectacular, with the quality the likes you seldom see in these games,” and concluding that “players that enjoy fantasy combat with a more realistic approach—similar to Lord of the Rings—will likely have a very good time with Raid: Shadow Legends.”[1] South African technology website htxt.africa praised the graphics, but overall found it boring with too many microtransactions.[7] Droid Gamers said it brings nothing new to the gacha RPG genre.[8]

The game has also achieved notoriety for its extensive advertising campaign, most notably its sponsorships with a number of YouTube personalities.[9] Due to this campaign, the game has become an internet meme, with many YouTube personalities promoting the game at some point.


Raid: Shadow Legends is an Israeli Developed fantasy-themed, turn-based role-playing gacha game.[3] The game’s story takes place in the fictional realm of Teleria, which has been subjugated by the Dark Lord Siroth. Players take the role of an ancient Telerian warrior resurrected to defeat the Dark Lord and restore peace and harmony to the territory. Players must assemble an army for battles in settings such as castles, dungeons, deserts and temples defended by enemies and possible allies.[3] Throughout the game, players accumulate Shards, vessels containing the souls of past warriors. Shards come in four types with different properties. Another currency in the game is Silver, which the player uses to do almost anything in the game, from leveling up champions, to playing a stage.

The game consists primarily of story-driven single-player campaign with twelve levels, each level made up of seven stages with three levels of difficulty.[3] The single-player campaign is interconnected with a multiplayer component to decide player rankings.

The game’s narrative was written by Paul C.R. Monk,[3] and the game adopts a Western art style, with realistic characters, and settings inspired by dark fantasy.
